Canelo Alvarez vs Amir Khan: Can Khan cause an upset?

Canelo vs Khan was made official last month, and the announcement of what looks set to be one of the biggest fights of the year shook the boxing world.

The fight, set to take place at the relatively new T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas on May 7, caught a lot of fans off-guard as Canelo is a middleweight champion while Khan is a former welterweight champ.

Seems like a mismatch, right?

Also, just days before the fight was announced there were ever-growing reports of Khan fighting the undefeated Kell Brook in an all-English clash this summer.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez – will the Mexican prevail?

Canelo, the current WBC Middleweight Champion, has an impressive record of 46 wins (32 KO’s) and one defeat.

The one defeat on his otherwise unblemished record was against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2013 where he lost on a unanimous points decision.

Other than that sole defeat, Canelo has been a dominant force in the middleweight division in recent years, and he will be looking to continue the form he’s shown of late in defending his WBC title against Khan.

The big hitting Mexican will be going into the bout with high hopes, and will feel quietly confident that he can beat the Englishman and retain his WBC title.

Amir Khan – will he be the king on the night?

Amir Khan has arguably been one of the biggest names in English boxing throughout the last decade and the fight against Canelo is potentially his biggest and most dangerous fight to date.

His record stands at an impressive 31 wins, with 19 of those wins being by KO and only the three defeats.

However, is this fight a step too far for Khan?

To take Canelo on, Khan has to move up a weight division. Certainly, if he does pull off the unexpected and emerge victorious on May 7 it will be the biggest win of his career so far.

Khan has had his critics in recent times, particularly because he has been putting off a widely-demanded fight against England’s Kell Brook for some time. However, those critics have been silenced for now by Khan accepting this tough fight with Canelo.

If Khan is going to do “the impossible” and beat Alvarez it’s vital that he utilises his main strength – his exceptional speed.

If he’s able to avoid the big hits thrown by the Mexican he might be able to land a few shots of his own.

In my opinion, I can’t see beyond Canelo Alvarez for this fight.

The Mexican is in great form and is used to competing at middleweight.

I think on the night his punches are going to prove too strong for Khan to shake off, although, you never know in the world of sport.

One thing is for certain – as well as the 20,000 packed into the arena, millions around the world will be tuning in to see if Khan can cause an historic upset on May 7.
